How DuraHeart works

The DuraHeart LVAS combines an implantable centrifugal pump with magnetic levitation technology to assist the left side of the heart in pumping blood and improving circulation throughout the body.

CENTRIFUGAL FLOW

As blood is drawn into a centrifugal pump, a paddlewheel-like component, called an impeller, gently moves the blood toward the outside walls and through the outflow conduit.

MAGNETIC LEVITATION

Magnetic levitation uses electromagnetic coils and three position sensors to precisely control the impeller position within the pump. The stable position of the impeller promotes gentle and consistent flow patterns.

WIDE, STABLE SPACING

A 250 micron gap between impeller and chamber wall provides room for even flow and washout, reducing the potential for high shear stress and platelet activation.

CLOSED, STRAIGHT-BLADE IMPELLER

This type of impeller creates a more stable flow pattern that minimizes turbulent flow and areas of stasis.

COVALENTLY BOUND HEPARIN

Heparin on blood contact surfaces contributes to reduced risk of post-implant thrombosis.
